2012 Family Fun Ride Information

Below is a press release regarding the information for the 3rd Annual Canals, Locks, and Bagels Family Fun Ride.

CANALS LOCKS and BAGELS 3rd Annual 2012 FAMILY BIKE RIDE PLANS FINALIZIED

Karen Blumhorst, project chairman for the Good for Business Canals Locks and Bagels 2012 Family Fun Bicycle Ride scheduled for Saturday, September 1st, 2012, announced today that plans for the fall ride have been finalized.

Preregistration is now open at a fee of $20, until September 1st 2012 (the day of the event).  On the day of the ride, the fee is $25 payable by check to: Good for Business, Inc. Registration forms are available from Good for Business, 124 S. Front Street, St. Marys, or may be downloaded at www.capabilitiesinc.biz.  This year you can also sign up on line at www.speedy-feet.com.

Registration fees include a goodie bag to the first 75 riders, breakfast before the ride, a hot German themed lunch, beverages, a cash beer garden, and admission to the Bicycle Museum of America in New Bremen. Maps and printed directions are available along the three marked loop trails. Trail marshals will be available for roadside assistance, and a SAG wagon will be covering the courses.

Rides will have the choice of either a 12 or two different 25 mile loop trails. You can also combine the two 25 mile trails for a total of 50 miles! All courses begin and end in Memorial Park in downtown St. Marys.

The 12 mile “Lock 14” loop is a ride along the banks of the Miami Canals (road bikes are not recommended).

The 25 mile “Deep Cut” loop is a ride to Deep Cut Park, passing through the historic canal town of Kossuth, crossing Bloody Bridge and Lock 14.

The 25 mile “Lock 1” loop is a ride that features a ride past the state fish hatchery, Lock One, Iron Bridge, the Lock Keepers House, the Bicycle Museum of America, canal town of Lock Two, the Aqueduct, and beautiful Grand Lake St. Marys.

After completing the loops, all riders will be treated to a hot German themed lunch, in honor of the German immigrants who built this section of the canal.

Same day registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00a.m. at the Gazebo. The trails open at 8:00a.m.

Food and entertainment begin at 11:00a.m., with all activities concluding by l:00 p.m.

The local Aktion Club, a branch of Kiwanis for persons with disabilities, will be serving coffee and bagels before the family fun ride and will be serving free water and yogurt after the ride, compliments of Grand lake Health System and the Dannon Company.

Proceeds from this charity event will be used by Good for Business, Inc., a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation, to begin the process of searching and securing grants and funding to help those with disabilities, physical, mental, and emotional, to get and keep jobs, improve their self- esteem, and make them more self-sufficient.

This event is cosponsored by the Revolution Cycling Team of Wapakoneta. They remind all riders to always ride with the flow of traffic. The use of bicycling helmets is mandatory on all Revolution Cycling Team sponsored events.

Blumhorst concluded by saying “This is not a race, but an opportunity for the entire family to enjoy the fall colors, the beauty of the 40 Acre Pond, the Bicycle Museum of America, and the history of the canal.” It is also a time to enjoy good food and live entertainment, and to help raise funds for a very worthwhile event.

Local Celebrity Named Honorary Chairman

Canals Locks and Bagels Family Fun Bicycle Ride chairman Stan Davis announced today that Ronda Shelby of St. Marys has been named the honorary chairman of the ride this year in memory of her late husband Larry and his love for bike riding.  Larry was instrumental in the establishment of several bikeways, including the Ohio 703 bike path and the Ohio 364 connector. He organized, directed and raced in the St. Marys Bike Race.  The Larry Shelby Memorial Bike Race has been held in his honor as well.  Mrs. Shelby has graciously donated a $100 cash gift to the family attending the ride that brings the most riders.  “Larry would be very happy to support this ride,” Mrs. Shelby proudly said.

The Canals Locks and Bagels Family Fun Bicycle Ride will take place on Saturday October 15th with registration opening at 7:30 AM at Memorial Park in downtown St Marys.  Riders will enjoy this exacting 12, 25, or 50 mile charity bike ride along the historical Miami and Erie Canal any time between 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM.  The $25 registration includes free lunch, entertainment, free entrance to the Bicycle Museum of America, free bottled water, free Dannon Yogurt, and a baseball hat.  All proceeds from the ride will benefit Good for Business, whose mission is to help persons with disabilities obtain and maintain employment.

The ride starts and ends at Memorial Park in St. Marys.  The three ride loops highlight places of interest along the Miami and Erie Canal both north and south of St. Marys.  The local Aktion Club will be selling coffee and bagels before the ride.

Maps and printed directions are available along the three marked loop trails. Trail marshals will be available for roadside assistance, and a SAG wagon will be covering the courses.

2011 Canals, Locks, and Bagels: Family Fun Ride

Is it October again already?  Well, yes, it will be here before we know it!  In 2010, the first annual Family Fun Ride took place, and we are looking forward to this year, the second annual Family Fun Ride!

Here is all the information on this year’s event:

Date: Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Time: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Registration begins at 7:30 AM)

Good For Business, Inc.

The staff at Capabilities are proud to say that there is now a local non-profit organization that is there solely for the purpose of helping people with disabilities.  This is Good For Business, Inc.  The CEO of Capabilities, Karen Blumhorst, has been hard at work setting up this non-profit organization.  In the coming months, Karen plans on getting a grant writer to help acquire grants so that Good For Business can do some good in our community.  Look for Good For Business to really take off in 2010!
