Canals Locks and Bagels Family Fun Bicycle Ride chairman Stan Davis announced today that Ronda Shelby of St. Marys has been named the honorary chairman of the ride this year in memory of her late husband Larry and his love for bike riding. Larry was instrumental in the establishment of several bikeways, including the Ohio 703 bike path and the Ohio 364 connector. He organized, directed and raced in the St. Marys Bike Race. The Larry Shelby Memorial Bike Race has been held in his honor as well. Mrs. Shelby has graciously donated a $100 cash gift to the family attending the ride that brings the most riders. “Larry would be very happy to support this ride,” Mrs. Shelby proudly said.
The Canals Locks and Bagels Family Fun Bicycle Ride will take place on Saturday October 15th with registration opening at 7:30 AM at Memorial Park in downtown St Marys. Riders will enjoy this exacting 12, 25, or 50 mile charity bike ride along the historical Miami and Erie Canal any time between 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The $25 registration includes free lunch, entertainment, free entrance to the Bicycle Museum of America, free bottled water, free Dannon Yogurt, and a baseball hat. All proceeds from the ride will benefit Good for Business, whose mission is to help persons with disabilities obtain and maintain employment.
The ride starts and ends at Memorial Park in St. Marys. The three ride loops highlight places of interest along the Miami and Erie Canal both north and south of St. Marys. The local Aktion Club will be selling coffee and bagels before the ride.
